The Conflict
Angolan Independence from Portuguese rule was achieved in 1975 after 14 years of fighting. The two leading political parties at the time, UNITA and MPLA fought alongside each other to realize this goal. After independence was achieved, the two parties fought against each other in what culminated as the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002). This civil war was one of the most prominent proxy wars of the Cold War, with each party receiving political and economic support from countries involved in the conflict.
Terra Angolana and Jornal De Angola
O U R R E S E A R C H
Part of our research was to examine and read articles from two prominent newspapers published in the country during the civil war: Jornal De Angola, the MPLA-backed newspaper, and Terra Angolana, UNITA-backed newspaper. Specifically looking from 1989-2002, our research included reading articles from certain time periods, and coding them based on certain criteria. Through different lenses, we hope to find trends in the qualitative data.
